Kinloch Lodge makes the perfect base to explore the best of the South Island. From jet boating and kayaking on Lake Wakatipu to scenic flights to Milford Sound and Mount Cook to hiking the Routeburn Track, we're in the heart of it all.
Hiking and Daywalks
There are more than 19 different day walks in the area and several famous extended walks, such as the Routeburn Track, Greenstone Track, Caples Track and Rees-Dart Track, start nearby. We also do track transfers from Kinloch Lodge to the Routeburn and Greenstone tracks.
Fishing Rod Hire - $15 for 24hrs
Lake Wakatipu is well stocked with salmon and trout and Kinloch Wharf offers some of the best fishing on the lake. Fishing rod hire is available from $15/day. Rental includes use of rod and 3 lures - ask at reception to see what styles are most popular with the fish at the moment. A fishing license is required to hire a rod. Please visit Fish and Game to get a fishing license online.
Mountain Bike Hire - $10/hr, $35/4hrs, $50/day
Kinloch Lodge offers hourly, half-day and full day bike hire. Bike hire allows guests without vehicles to access more walks in the area. Cycling to the Lake Rere at the Greenstone Track takes about 45 minutes, Glacier Burn about 10 minutes and cycling up to the Routeburn Track takes about 1.5 hours (as it is partially uphill). Bikes are available on a first come, first served basis. Please enquire at check-in.
4WD Tours and Film Locations
The scenery in the area is spectacular and if walking is not your thing, 4WD companies can help you experience the area in depth by taking you to some of the out of the way places that you only discover with inside knowledge and access onto private land. Trips are available with a focus on Lord of the Rings Film locations.
Flight-seeing trips by helicopter and fixed wing aircraft to Milford Sound and Mount Cook depart from Glenorchy airport. Milford Sound is just 36 kilometres in a direct line from Glenorchy. The change in scenery over this area is phenomenal and if the weather is fine, it is one of the most spectacular excursions you will ever take. Because there are no landing fees at Glenorchy Airstrip, flight-seeing trips to Milford Sound can be more economical from Glenorchy than from Queenstown.
Jet-boating and Kayaking
The Dart River is a spectacular river for jet-boating. Travelling 35 kilometres into a World Heritage area to Sandy Bluff, guests experience the change from the wide open areas of a typical South Island river to the canyons at the top as one penetrates deep in the Mt Aspiring National Park.
The lake offers great kayaking opportunities with trips to Pigeon island and from Kinloch to Mill Creek historic settlement and into some of the calm tributaries at the head of the lake.
The Dart River Valley is a spectacular location for horse trekking. Choose a trip for beginners where the focus is a scenic amble on a horse through the Paradise area or along the river, or choose a trip for experienced riders that will take you cantering through wide open spaces and spectacular scenery.
Return from New Zealand with great pictures from the area around the head of the lake. Kinloch is a great base to wake up in the morning and start taking stunning pictures.
