Time: 4-8 hours
The track is steep, but three quarters of the climb follows a good zig zag track, after this a marked route can be followed as far as the bushline. Above the bushline this track is steep and exposed; not recommended for young children. The public can walk to the bushline as it’s DOC land but if you would like to go beyond the trees and enjoy that amazing 360 summit view you will need to book with Mt Alfred Guiding Company as this is private land. The land owners are very committed to conservation of this pristine area and want to avoid too many hiking the summit – this will be to your advantage as you will have the whole summit to yourself! The approach is on the Western (Dart) side of the peak – look for a small car park area unmarked on the left hand side of the Glenorchy to Routeburn road.
